Diabetes affects our bodies manyways and can impact both your overall health and your vision. Patients with diabetes can develop diabetic eye diseases, an umbrella term used to describe a wide variety of conditions that stem from or are more prominent in conjunction with diabetes.
Patients with diabetes have a higher risk of developing:
Most of these conditions progress slowly, and may not exhibit any noticeable symptoms until permanent damage has already occurred, which makes annual eye exams a critical part of any diabetic health care strategy.
Patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes should see an optometrist at least once per year. OHIP covers yearly exams, and any required follow up assessments for patients with diabetes.
As part of your diabetic eye exam at Barrhaven Optometric, we will analyze your eyesusing OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), which allows us to take a cross-sectional image of your retina, and we’ll take wide-field retinal photographs.
We will also conduct visual field tests, which will enable us to accurately determine your peripheral vision. This test also allows us to determine if there are any blind spots in your vision, which may indicate eye disease.
These tests allow us to accurately assess your eyes for possible diabetic eye diseases.
